how do i choose a therapist?

Therapists come in many varieties, all sorts of combinations of theoretical orientations, techniques, methods, personalities, individual styles, letters after their names, tissue box sizes and office decors. Knowing how to pick one and what matters most when doing so can feel overwhelming. And the internet has as many opinions about what kind of therapy is “best” as there are options.

Well, we delight in answering this question simply: The right therapist for you is the one that is your best fit.

Your relationship with your therapist is probably the most important factor in determining whether your therapy will be effective. (Seriously, the research shows it.) The initial fit is about chemistry. The ease with which you can open up. Feeling seen and understood. Feeling safe and supported, yet still empowered and in control. Feeling that your therapist meets you where you are. Feeling that they are genuinely invested in your growth and wellbeing. Feeling that you can show up in whatever state you are in and that it will be embraced. Feeling that they get you.

Sometimes knowing whether you found the right fit happens only after meeting with more than one therapist. Don’t be afraid to try a few out. Trust your intuition.

who we are.

Our clinical psychologists and social work therapists are trained as “generalists,” meaning we are skilled at treating depression, anxiety, issues related to self-esteem, relationships, family challenges, identity, and life transitions. We also have each developed special areas of interest and experience during our training and clinical practice (for example, trauma, substance use issues, gender and sexuality, and college mental health). So, if you are looking for someone with a specific area of knowledge or experience, check out our staff bios to see if any one of us resonates with you.

therapy for everyone.

Our therapists have extensive education, training, and clinical experience in gender and sexual diversity.

We are that safe, comfortable place to explore your gender or sexuality no matter where you fall on the spectrum. Our clients are straight couples and queer couples, monogamous and poly, cisgender, non-binary and transgender, and every experience in between.

We use an affirmative approach to therapy, which means we use only those labels and pronouns that you use.

And, while you may identify as trans, queer, gay, sexually fluid, poly, asexual, or simply in love with someone of the same gender, we also recognize that these identities and relationships may have nothing to do with your reasons for seeking therapy. Your sexuality, gender identity, and relationships are only the focus for therapy if you want them to be.

umm… do we need to talk to someone?

This is a very common question for couples to ask themselves. It doesn’t signal doom for your relationship, but rather is recognition that something isn’t working and that you are stuck as far as what to do about it. Couples therapy is the place and the process of identifying what’s not going right and what steps are needed to get back on track. And it’s never too soon or too late to get to work.

VIDEO THERAPY

Therapy that comes to you. To your desk, your couch, your parents’ garage, your roommate’s car, your fire escape, or the log on a side of a hiking trail. What can be more convenient than that? The emotional work of therapy is hard enough. Figuring out how to fit it into your life no longer needs to be part of the struggle. We’ll make showing up the easy part. It’s the least we can do.

Groundwork Therapy offers video therapy via an easy-to-use, HIPAA-compliant video platform. Accessible from your phone, tablet, or computer it is an excellent option for clients who travel often or are otherwise challenged by the inconvenience of commuting into the office. Many clients do a combination of in-person and video sessions depending on what works best for them. Let’s do what works for you.

ps, did we mention our therapy dog?

Therapy Dog Brooklyn NY

Meet Apollo, our office pup. This goofy, lovable guy was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Georgia. He is certified as a Canine Good Citizen and is registered as a volunteer therapy dog with Alliance of Therapy Dogs. His favorite places to volunteer are with NYPD and FDNY 911-dispatchers and with stressed-out college students during finals week. Apollo attends sessions with a few of Groundwork Therapy’s therapists, but even if he isn’t available for your therapy appointment, you likely will be greeted by him in the waiting room (where he will be happily awaiting your arrival, treats, and belly rubs). Apollo is naturally skilled at providing emotional support, comfort, and affection. Also, at sleeping, snoring, and all-around lazying. He’s looking forward to meeting you.
