Relationship counseling and couples therapy, NYC

It’s the service that is called by many names - couples therapy, couples counseling, relationship therapy, marriage counseling, and partnership counseling. It’s the process by which two individuals examine their relationship more closely and deeply than they have done before in an effort to uncover all the factors getting in the way of connection, trust, intimacy, and satisfaction. It’s a medium of growth and healing that doesn’t discriminate between relationships - not by how long they’ve been together, the type or level of commitment, nor their cultural or identity makeup.

When is the right time to see a therapist?

The right time to see a therapist is when you are ready. For some couples this is at the early inklings that communication is off. For others it’s upon the realization that they can’t get themselves unstuck from the harmful or dissatisfying pattern that they are in. And for others it is a crisis or thoughts of ending the relationship that signal the time for some outside help. Your couples therapist will meet the two of you where you are at with whatever factors are bringing you in, no matter how long you’ve been struggling with them.

Our Approach

Our couples therapists are trained in a variety of therapy approaches, including Gottman, Emotionally Focused Therapy (or EFT), and psychodynamic. Their expertise lies in their abilities to customize the application of varying techniques, skills, interventions, and psychoeducation to each unique relationship they work with. We believe that there is no “one size fits all” approach to relationship therapy. We value flexibility and collaboration.

Through exploration and assessment, our therapists help each partnership to identify and define what is not working more specifically. This process may include examining cultural and identity variables, current stressors and outside influences on the relationship, as well as each individual’s relationship history, family history, and expectations, wishes, fantasies, and fears about the relationship. This deepened understanding orients the therapist and couple toward the areas for growth and change. At this point, your therapist acts as a teacher, guide, and mediator as you progress together.

LGBTQ+ Relationship Therapy

Our couples therapists have extensive experience working with partnerships all along the queer spectrum of gender, sexuality, and relationship orientation.
