Licensed Psychologist

pronouns: she/her/hers

Dr. Grace Johnson is a licensed clinical psychologist providing individual and couples therapy to adults addressing a variety of concerns including interpersonal/relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, identity development, life transitions, trauma, and loss. Dr. Johnson has particular clinical interests in mindfulness, exploration of attachment patterns, gender and sexual diversity, young adulthood, and helping clients learn to cope with and develop tolerance of intense emotions. Dr. Johnson also has experience working with medical students, college students, and loved ones of people with acute mental health issues.

Dr. Johnson’s approach to therapy is integrative, utilizing relational psychodynamic psychotherapy, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). Through this approach, Dr. Johnson commonly works with clients on two main processes: 1)  identifying long-standing relational patterns (often developed in early childhood) that keep them “stuck” in painful cycles in order to facilitate meaningful change in their relationships, and 2) building skills to better handle in-the-moment crises and day-to-day challenges. She places an emphasis on environmental factors including community, culture, race, and power dynamics with the hope to provide equitable, contextualized, and holistic care. She engages with her clients compassionately, directly, and often with humor to create an authentic and safe therapeutic relationship, while also actively working toward goals.

Dr. Johnson has received specialized training in full-model DBT and CBT for Psychosis (CBT-P). Dr. Johnson earned her MA and PsyD in clinical psychology from the University of Hartford Graduate Institute of Professional Psychology. Her dissertation focused on the subjective experiences of the self in adults with schizophrenia and the influence of trauma on selfhood. She earned her BA in psychology from James Madison University.
